Madera Frames - Demo

Whimsical and epic shreddy emo from the Mid Ohio Valley. 4 song demo from 2006 or 2007. Their only release before breaking up. Members have since gone on to Enzuigiri, Horseburner, Orphan City, or just making hip hop beats with Aladin samples.

Nymb - So, This is How it is

Female-fronted indie/emo from Chicago. This was their last full-length. Members went on to Chin Up Chin Up and The Reputation.

Universe - Passenger

Bloomington, IN supergroup playing metal-influenced punk/hardcore. Ridiculous pedigree aside (features members of Good Luck, Ghost Mice, and Soophie Nun Squad), this record is totally cool. This band played an incredibly last-minute show at my parent's house sometime last year and were great.

Fun fact: The singer of this band, who is an award-winning graphic novelist, did the artwork for the Guyana Punch Line record I posted earlier today.

Guyana Punch Line - Irritainment

Weird and sarcastic hardcore from South Carolina featuring ex-members of In/Humanity. This was recommended (and later sold) to me by a friend a while back and I still listen to it regularly. Thanks Brian.

The Danger O's - Massively Intimidating Episodes

Westchester, PA power pop trio with nods to The Pixies & The Police. Released as a double 7" on Creep Records. The track "Black Lung" is a club-banger.

The Postage Era - Fatal Autopsy

Synth laden screamy emo (not screamo) dissonant and riffy. 2001 full length on the now defunct Action Driver Records. Recorded at Inner Ear. From New Jersey, now broken up.

Three Shades of Dirty - Paper Roses demo

1990 cassette demo released on Vermin Scum. Ex-member(s?) of The Hated. Shreddy emo with that "90s voice" thing going on. This shit is unreal. The track "Stalemate" fucks up and turns into static for a while and scared the shit out of me. Be careful

The Read - 7"

Ohio 3 piece punks on Q and Not You. Self titled 2 song 7" released on Phatry Records. Pronounced like "red."

The New & Very Welcome - Drowning in it!

2007 full length from New England angsty singer / songwriter. "Emo" wouldn't be a terrible way to describe this album. "Fucking fantastic" works just as well.

Merchandise - (Strange Songs) In the Dark

Post-Punk from Tampa, FL featuring members of some really good hardcore bands (Divisions, Cult Ritual, etc.) This is their first full-length. It's noiser and more abstract than the earlier stuff, but still rules.

Killed at Camp - Eating Cake While Playing

Wheeling, WV mathy dissonant screamy emo stuff. Second and final album released in 2000. This band has since broken up. You can stream and download both of their albums at bandcamp or look at their myspace for more information on who there were / where they went. Shared members with Horns To The Matador who I had posted previously. This album is fucking crucial to your existence.

"Killed At Camp was a screamy indie rock band that formed among college friends in Wheeling, WV in 1998. Members had been in previous WV bands such as Five Minute Conspiracy, Hawthorne, and Egress. The sound was a disjointed configuration of sounds ranging from early '90's screamo, metal, glam rock, noise, and hardcore. Influences on this band may have included such acts as Harriet the Spy, Fugazi, At The Drive-In, The Party Of Helicopters, T Rex, Lifetime, and Grain."

Joie De Vivre - The North End

Emo from Illinois. They wear their Mineral influence on their sleeve, but when was that ever a bad thing?

Monday, October 18, 2010

Florence and Libby

Pennsylvania poppy stuff with screamy vocals. I heard this band for the first time about an hour ago. Ex-members of Bearathon. This shit rules

The Jazz June - They Love Those Who Make The Music

1997 full length. Pennsylvania emo / post hardcore

Former Thieves - The Great and Alleged Great

Heavy experimental hardcore from Iowa. Reminds me of They and the Children, Botch, These Arms Are Snakes

Chris Yang - May All Yr Children Be Dragons

Really cool folk music from Canada. I saw him play a kitchen in New Hampshire a few years ago and it was one of the most intense shows I've ever seen.

Split-release in 2007 by Burnt Oak and Youth Club.

Verse En Coma - Rialto

Heartfelt and lush emo (or something like that) from ex-members of Malady and City of Caterpillar. Described elsewhere as "grunge-filtered post-rock." That sounds pretty horrible to me, but maybe it's accurate. I don't think this band has ever played a show, but this record is pretty excellent.

Beauty Pageant - In Adult Film / Dear Gravity

Lo-fi weird pop from Bobby Burg of Joan of Arc. This release includes 2 albums ("Dear Gravity" & "In Adult Film") as seperate single track compilations. I have no idea why. Released in 1998.

Make Believe (featuring Bobby Burg on bass)

Boilerman - Bright Young Things

I posted their demo at the beginning of last month. Now here is their 4 song EP "Bright Young Things". Chicago pop punk trio.

Deer Leap - Demo

My band recently did a 10 day tour with New Hapshire's Deer Leap. They play post-tinged twinklemo similar to American Football / Do Make Say Think. Mostly Instrumental with some spacey reverb damaged vocals. I post Keith from DL's previous band 6:37 last month.

Once Again - Low Life Crisis

In October 1999 I was 14 years old and attended my first ever DIY punk show at The Barn in Moundsville, WV. My very limited scope of punk included bands found on $5 punk compilation cd's picked up at Sam Goody. Once Again was the first band to play and the first band I had ever seen live. They played shreddy pop punk vaguely similar to Propaghandi. The drummer almost exclusively played somewhat slower blast beats. To this day I've never heard another band that sounds very similar. Not that OA were all that ground breaking. This band stuck around too long and devolved into some sort bad Shadows Fall esque metal / punk hybrid as the Wheeling, WV DIY scene disolved. The only track missing from this download of their 2nd full length "Low Life Crisis" is a cover of "Friend" by their Wheeling, WV hardcore contemporaries Ahimsa. Don't expect this album to blow you away. I fucking love the quality of this recording and that only thing besides nostalgia that keeps this release listenable for me.

Above is the flier for the first show I ever went to. Once Again is included as one of the "guests" that night.

Lauren Hospital - Dark Times are Coming Vol. I - VI

Very little information on this defunct Ohio based band is available on the internet. Early 2000's experimental "emo" with some darker shreddy riffs reminiscent of Party of Helicopter's aesthetic. I couldn't even find a live photo. Members of this band and Apart From the Projector formed the Columbus, OH beast Between The Devil & The Deep Blue Sea.

My Disco - Paradise

Amazingly minimal Steve Albini-produced noise-punk from Melbourne, Australia. Lots of one-note bass lines, weird rhythms, and dissonant guitar shit. Good enough to split records with Young Widows and Off Minor.

Deathrats - 7"

Female-fronted hardcore that is fast and righteous. This band is pretty ferocious live and seems to be getting a bunch of coverage in various punk media outlets. They're from Washington D.C.

You Blew It - 2009 EP

Florida twinklemo trio. Presented to me by a friend as "The best mix of American Football & The Appleseed Cast." I get some older Modest Mouse vibes on the low key instrumentals. This is was released in 2009 and distributed entirely for free.

STArs of the Dogon - S/T

Baltimore, MD screamy 2 piece that for some reason has always been labeled as "emo / hardcore". This album was released in 2002.

thismountainisman. - Tour '09 demo

I don't remember where I downloaded this demo. I think the band is from South Carolina. Four lo-fi buzzy metallic crust punk jams.

Toe - The Book About My Idle Plot on a Vague Anxiety

2005 full length from Japanese spacey instrumentalists with the sickest of drummers.

Thursday, August 12, 2010

Maer Deht - Self titled

Grindy spastic tech metal / hardcore from Ohio. Normally wouldn't be my thing but this shit slays. Their name makes sense backwords. The existed for 20 months somewhere around 04 / 05 I think.

6:37 - Demo

New Hampshire pre-Deer Leap emo / post rock similar to American Football and The Appleseed Cast.

Grids - White Walls

Jesus Lizard worship dissonant punk from North Carolina. Released 2010 on Inkblot

Horns To The Matador - We Own This Town, Johnny

Thick, crunchy emo / pop rock from Wheeling, WV. Released in 2000

Humans Bow Down - A Mirror

Cincinnati, Ohio indie rock in vein of Sunny Day Something or other but not really. Released in 2004 on Phatry Records before breaking up.

Human Host & Fridge A split.

Very raw garage-ish early Human Host songs. Fridge A half is also vaguely garage pop / casiobeat. Released in 2003 on Baths of Power. Now out of print
